UI Diary (Episode 5)
Episode 5
Singing softly under my breath, I entered the house. Pulling my phone from my bag, I dialed Emmanuel’s number. My calls went unanswered. I leaned against the banister of the first set of stairs and waited for Emma to show up.
“Kenny how far na?”, Came a deep voice from behind me.
“Hey. Didn’t know you were downstairs”.
“I was. I had just finished washing so I was waiting for your call”
“I’m sorry I hadn’t come earlier. I went for an all-night programme in church so I couldn’t go to Bodija”
No problem. I’ve bought all the ingredients when you told me you couldn’t go so as not to stress you”.
Smiling at his thoughtfulness, I took off my Jacket. “You know I’m not doing this for free though”, I joked. “I had already planned not to take any orders today but the urgency of your call scared me”.
“I’m sorry. It’s just that I didn’t have dinner yesterday. I’ll send the money to you now sef plus extra”
Rolling my eyes, I followed him to his kitchen. Washing my hands under the tap, I tied a scarf on my braids and got working.
I was so engrossed in what I was doing when it happened the first time. A hand was snaking its way down my back and was so quickly retrieved. Looking back, I noticed he was getting pots from a cupboard and it couldn’t have been on purpose. Only some minutes had passed again when it happened again. This time it was my hips. Craning my neck, I gave him the best stink eye I could muster.
“Do you mind?”, I thundered. He didn’t give any response. As if daring me, his other hand joined. Chewing my lower lip, I sashayed out of his hold.
“Emma, I’ll pretend this never happened”
I had only started rinsing vegetables when he moved behind me. Fuming underneath, I pushed but he wouldn’t give. At this, fear gripped me. The Emmanuel I knew was a happy go lucky guy who had a smile for everyone. I could still remember the first time we met on the SUB football pitch where we clicked instantly like we were long lost friends. It had even gotten better when I discovered we both had the same knack for War novels.
“Emmanuel, I beg you in the name of Jesus. What are you doing?. What’s wrong with you this afternoon? Is the sun affecting your brain? Maybe I should come back when you are in your right senses”.
I took off my apron and made to leave. I had almost gotten to the door when I was bodily shoved into a wall. My head thudded on the wall and for a moment I got dizzy. Gripping the front of my blouse, he dragged me to match his breath.
“What’s wrong with you? You think everyone gives a shove about what you think you are. You are so engrossed in seeing the good in everyone that you’ve gone blind. You go about in your holier than thou attitude than thou attitude”
The wicked glint in his eyes was unnerving. Adrenaline was pumping in my blood furiously. He smiled wolfish like and locked the door.
He was still locking the door when I picked the meanest looking knife off the chopping block. Turning around, he laughed boisterously at the sight of me holding the knife. The sight was funny. A four foot me clutching a filleting knife to myself. Grinding my teeth together, I shook off fear. If I was going to make it out of here unscathed, I might as well own it.
“You know there’s something fascinating about the human blood. It’s crimson red but the shade varies in individuals”. Twirling the knife in my grip, I laughed like a lunatic. “I’ve always wondered how it would look like hot and gushing without oxygen”.
“I’ve been thinking if it would taste different also. Tangy metallic flavor or burnt metal. Or maybe it would smell as the body tried to hold on to the last gulp of life. Guess I am about to find out today. You may also know, your wrists are perfect spots for bleeding you dry. Like a stream, it will flow endlessly. Or I could try that place beneath your Oesophagus. Like an oil well, it will gush out and out until you are dead. I’ve been told manyย atimes by my brother that my teeth are “little snipers’. Especially my canines, they can bite through almost anything and even if I have to chew your neck like yesterday’s bread, I’m game. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do whatever you want to me o”.
“Just know you might end up lame, blind or dead”
“And you think you will go scot free?”, he asked leaning against the wall
“No, I didn’t say that. But here’s the picture.
Bright 300 level undergraduate without a mean bone in her body who doesn’t even cuss anyone, lives off campus and is a devout Christian, goes to church consistently, doesn’t wear earrings, sweet with a smile, keeps to herself, a feminist, introverted and popular in journalism. The most that could happen is detention. But don’t forget something, you are a postgraduate student and you are all shades of fucked”
“Las Las. I will say you have been abusing me for a while and didn’t know who to talk to. With UI’s strict policy on gender mainstreaming, they will come for you. It might even make the national papers and they wouldn’t want to wash their dirty linen in public. I go free with a slap on the wrist and everyone’s pity. Lobatan. You are fucked up all because of five minutes madness”. Sweating profusely, he shook his head from side to side “I knew you were crazy. The quiet ones are”
Unlocking the door, he leaves it open. Smiling sweetly, I said, “Oh and one more thing, if I don’t see my money within the next 30 minutes. You can expect to become Monday’s episode of inside UI and you know UItes na tattletales. If I were you, I wouldn’t want that to happen”
Chuckling to myself, I stormed out of the kitchen. As soon as I got out of the building, I ran as fast as my short legs could carry.
Arriving home, I dived into bed and started laughing. My heart was beating like a freight train. What a close call. What if he had called my bluff?. I held my head and counted from 1-10.My phone gave a ping beside me and I saw a credit alert.
Smiling to myself, it seems Father Christmas showed up early.
