Chad: General Mahamat Becomes Interim President

In the midst of the wide ranging reactions to the death of Chad President Idriss Deby, his son Mahamat Idriss Deby, 37 years of age military general has been named transitional leader and as the head of the countryโ€™s military council. He is to occupy the functions of the President of the republic and also serve as head of the armed forces. Mahamat on Wednesday, 21 April has been named โ€˜the supreme head of the armed forcesโ€™ in Chad.

Polity Reporters as of this moment, understands that Mahamat Idriss, whose name across the media has been adjusted to โ€˜young Debyโ€™ would begin to chair and oversee the activities of the Chadโ€™s council of Ministers, military transition council, the councils and superior committees of national defense as stipulated in the Transition charter – a 95 articles document that also guarantees freedom of opinion, conscience and worship.

General Mahamat in a short while has named members of his transition government. However, the charter denies members of the army who have been invited into the transition government to combine military works and the work of the transitional government together. In that regard, members of the army who have been called to the transition government have been discharged from all military duties.
