2023: Why Tinubu Picked Shettima Over El Rufai, Zulum — Hon. Akinte

Hon. Adetoba Akinte, a political science student at the University of Ibadan, has asserted that Shettima’s selection as Tinubu’s VP may be linked to the former’s vigorous and active work as Tinubu’s campaign DG, which resulted in the latter’s emergence as the party’s flagbearer.

Hon. Akinte made this revelation yesterday (Wednesday) while speaking on Polity Track, a political discussion hosted by Mr Adebayo Yusuf Oluwatimileyin.

When questioned if Shettima’s selection was based on loyalty or competence, Hon replied that he was chosen based on competency rather than loyalty.

To buttress his position, he said, “it takes a competent steward to lead a train and generate over 1000 votes for his principal in an election of 2000+ participants.”

While commenting on Shettima’s economic experience and what he brings to the table, Akinte said that Shettima has served and continues to serve in various political capacities in the past and has proven to be an excellent difference in the political space, as verified by his antecedents.

On Shettima’s electoral value and the value he brings to Tinubu’s ticket, Hon. Akinte clarified, “In politics, your ability to generate votes establishes your relevance.

“Shettima is from the North East (Borno state) and unarguably considering the millions of votes coming from this geographical zones.

“With Shettima on the ballot, APC has the high chances of winning Borno state, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Yobe of which according to INEC has 1, 275, 649 registered voters.”

Further, the Ondo-born student politician reacted to Tinubu’s rejection of El Rufai and Zulum as his VP by referencing the Bible. Citing Amos 3:3, he affirmed that Tinubu has picked a person with whom he knows he could work with, while believing Shettima’s choice to be the wisest.

Hon. Akinte also commented on the implication of the Muslim-Muslim Ticket.

“There is no big or heinous implication. What we are seeing now. We have witnessed it before.

“The highest is criticisms, some aggrieved members will leave the party. But the vision of the strategy of the joint ticket will be accomplished. Because, it is simply the best,” Akinte explained.

In addition, he said that Atiku and the other candidates chose their running mates on the premise of garnering votes as they all have distinct techniques for winning elections.

He however warned those who are inflaming the polity with religious intolerance and prejudice to desist, saying it is not beneficial for the growth of the country.

As his final remarks, Hon. Akinte ended: “Awolowo was a Christian, so was Akintola his Deputy but when Akintola and Awolowo parted ways, Awolowo brought Alhaji Adegbenro to Power as Premier and Balewa a Muslim helped to sack Adegbenro and returned Akintola.

“POLITICS is not religion.

“When Kingibe was asked, during a debate in 1993, ‘Abiola and You are Muslims, how will the interest of Christians be protected in your government?’

“Kingibe replied ‘Abiola and I are never and will never be representing Muslims or Christians in government, the interest of Muslims will be handled by Sultan of Sokoto while that of Christians will be handled by Okogie(the CAN President), we are representing Nigerians regardless of their religions. My Boss Abiola comes from Majority Yoruba in the SW, I come from the Minority Kanuri in the NE. Abiola comes from core Private Sector, I come from core Public Sector to save Nigeria and move our country beyond the reach of bigotry…..’

“That ‘MuslimMuslim’ Ticket won in 1993. Guess what? The man who annulled it was IBB a Muslim from the North and handed over to unelected Shonekan, a Christian from the South!!!!
