FG Distributes Free Cooking Gas Cylinders To Women In Lagos

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo On Monday, launched the distribution of free cooking gas cylinders to around 300 women in Lagos State, in partnership with the Decade of Gas Initiative.

Speaking at the occasion in Ikeja, Ekpo declared that the distribution of cylinders is part of the government’s initiative to ensure and make provision for healthy cooking to one million families by 2030.

According to Ekpo, President Bola Tinubu was in full support of the initiative since he was fully concerned about his people’s wellbeing, therefore encouraged the women to switch from the usage of firewood, kerosene, and charcoal to LPG, expressing that it is clean, safe, and good for the environment.

He, however, cautioned the women not to sell the cylinders, stressing that gas will be made available at a lower price as the government is working rigorously with the relevant sectors to ensure that the price is subsidized.

He further implored them to be patient and cooperate with the government and the government will work for them towards a better tomorrow.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume who was ably represented by one of his aides, Professor Babatunde Bolaji urged the beneficiaries to utilize the cylinders well and desist from cooking with firewood.

Akume noted that using firewood involves cutting down trees, and the smoke from the fire leads to health hazards such as miscarriage which is detrimental to their health.

The SGF also stated that the price of cooking gas would reduce because the Federal Government is actively dealing with gas flaring concerns, which will give the country with additional gas.

Similarly, Orelope Adefulure, the Special Adviser to the President on Sustainable Development Goals(SDG), told the Lagos women that the SDG would collaborate with the Decade of Gas Initiative in order distribute more cylinders throughout Lagos State’s local government areas.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Ghali Mustapha, a congressman from Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu Federal Constituency, praised and acknowledged the initiative, stressing that the previous administration had failed to come up with such to promote healthy, clean and safe cooking.

Mr Ed Ebong, Coordinator of the Decade of Gas Secretariat concluded that 250,000 cylinders will be delivered annually until 2030, marking the evolution of the LPG penetration programme in the South-West, with the team set to move to Akwa Ibom on Tuesday.
