Fee Hike: UI Closes School, Asks Students To Vacate Campus

The University of Ibadan has announced a three-week break, effective from Saturday, August 31, 2024, to September 20, 2024, amid a protest by students against the recent fee hike approved by the Governing Council.

Recall that the fee hike has generated controversy on campus, with students thronging the length and breadth of the campus to protest against the decision of the University management.

However, in a release dated August 30, 2024, signed by the Registrar, G. O. Salin, and seen by Polity Reporters, the University announced the break, stating that the three weeks is to give students ample time to complete their online registration.

Polity Reporters gathered that this development to shut the school was made following a meeting between the University Management and the Students Union leadership on Friday, August 30, 2024.

And, according to release, hostels will reopen on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 12 noon, and the 2023/2024 first semester examinations will commence on Monday, September 23, 2024.

The release furthered that the registration portal will close on Friday, September 20, 2024, and will not be reopened for fee payment or course registration after that date.

The management, according to the release, stressed that students who fail to register appropriately will not be allowed to write examinations, and all students are required to vacate the campus by 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 31, 2024 (today).

โ€œFollowing the meeting of University Management with the leadership of the Students Union today, Friday, 30 August, 2024, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of Senate, has approved three weeks break for students of the University of Ibadan, with effect from Saturday, 31 August, 2024 to 20 September, 2024.

 

โ€œThe hostels will be reopened for students from 12 noon on Friday, 20 September, 2024.

 

โ€œStudents are, therefore, to note the following:

 

โ€œThe three weeks is to give students ample time to complete their online registration.

 

โ€œThe 2023/2024 first semester examinations will now start on Monday, 23 September, 2024.

 

โ€œThe portal for registration will be closed on Friday, 20 September, 2024. There will be no re-opening of the portal for fee payment or course registration after 20 September, 2024.

 

โ€œStudents who do not register appropriately will not be allowed to write examinations.

 

โ€œAll students are to vacate the University Campus latest by 2.00pm on Saturday, 31 August, 2024.
