Peter Obi Mourns Victims of Niger, Oyo Tanker Explosions

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed his condolences over the loss of lives and livelihoods in the recent tanker explosions in Niger and Oyo states.

In a statement on his social media account, Obi described the incidents as “painful” and “disheartening”, particularly given the proximity of the two events.

He commiserated with the people and governments of both states and praised the safety and emergency agencies for their swift response.

At least 30 lives were lost in the Niger state explosion, which occurred in Agaie Local Government Area, while many more were injured.

The incident also resulted in the loss of about 50 cattle.

This tragedy came just 24 hours after a similar tanker explosion caused significant damage in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

Obi said, “I am pained by the loss of human lives and other means of livelihood in these two tragic events.

“I thank the safety and emergency agencies that arrived at the scene for search and rescue operations.

“I sincerely condole with all the affected families who lost their loved ones to this tragedy.”

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that 48 persons who died in the explosion were given a mass burial, while 18 more bodies were recovered during further search and rescue operations.

Obi prayed for the forgiveness of the sins of the dead and for eternal rest, as well as quick recovery for the injured.
