Legendary Actor James Earl Jones Passes Away at 93

Renowned American actor James Earl Jones, whose iconic voice brought to life the character of Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” franchise, has passed away at the age of 93.

His representatives announced his death on Monday.

Jones’ illustrious career spanned over six decades, with notable performances in Shakespearean plays, August Wilson’s works, and iconic voiceovers in “Star Wars” and Disney’s “The Lion King.”

He won numerous awards, including three Tony Awards, two Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement.

Born on January 17, 1931, in segregated Mississippi, Jones overcame a childhood stutter to become one of the most recognizable voices in the industry, crediting reciting poetry with helping him gain control of his voice.

Jones’ iconic portrayal of Darth Vader, though not physically, cemented his place in cinematic history, as his voice added depth and menace to the character, making him one of the greatest villains in cinema.

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas praised Jones, saying, “He created, with very little dialogue, one of the greatest villains that ever lived.”
