Davido Thrills Thousands At Ethiopia’s 2017 New Year Celebration
Renowned Afrobeat artist Davido performed at Ethiopia’s New Year ceremony, marking the country’s entrance into 2017.
The highly-anticipated event, held in the capital city of Addis Ababa, drew a massive crowd of thousands of Ethiopians eager to celebrate their unique new year.
A viral video circulating on social media showcases Davido’s captivating performance, which left the audience in awe.
What sets Ethiopia’s New Year celebration apart is the country’s adherence to its distinctive calendar system, known as the Ethiopian calendar or Ge’ez calendar.
This ancient calendar, rooted in the Egyptian calendar, differs significantly from the widely used Gregorian calendar.
Interestingly, Ethiopia’s New Year, “Enkutatesh,” falls on either September 11th or 12th, seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar.
This discrepancy arises from alternate calculations determining the date of Jesus’ birth announcement.
The festivities encompass traditional church services, festive meals, and cultural activities.
