MTN Nigeria Proposes 100% Tariff Hike Amid Economic Hardship
The Chief Executive of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, has announced that the telecommunications firm has submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a 100% service tariff increase.
This move comes amid speculation of an imminent telecom service tariff hike in Nigeria.
However, Toriola expressed doubts about the proposal’s approval due to the current economic hardship in the country.
The proposed tariff hike is not isolated to MTN Nigeria, as other telecom operators, including Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile, have also lobbied the NCC for permission to increase tariffs.
The telecom operators cite escalating costs, including energy, infrastructure maintenance, and regulatory compliance, as reasons for the proposed hike.
It’s worth noting that the NCC has already approved a tariff increase, which took effect in January 2025, with tariffs expected to rise by up to 40%.
However, the proposed 100% tariff hike by MTN Nigeria is significantly higher.
