[JUST IN] Ibadan Stampede: Oriyomi Hamzat, Naomi, School Principal Regain Freedom

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, Olori Naomi Silekunola, and Abdullahi Fasasi, the school principal, in connection with the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin delivered the ruling on Monday, January 13, 2025, after hearing the bail applications from the defendants’ legal teams.

The court granted bail to Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM, with conditions including the payment of N10 million and the provision of two sureties.

In addition, the court ordered that Agidigbo FM must refrain from broadcasting any news related to the ongoing case as part of the bail conditions.

The charges against the trio stem from a tragic incident that occurred during a childrenโ€™s festive party in December 2024, where a stampede claimed the lives of at least 35 children.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had previously stressed the importance of justice for the victims while stating that he was not opposed to the granting of bail.

During the bail hearings, the defense argued that the accused were not flight risks and would cooperate fully with the judicial process.

Adekunle Shobaloju (SAN), counsel for one of the defendants, Hamzat Oriyomi, said, โ€œWell, what we did was we filed an application that he should be admitted to bail pending arraignment, and the application was argued today.

โ€œThe court listened to all the various arguments, and the ruling was reserved till the 13th of January. So principally, we are saying that he ought to be admitted on bail based on certain grounds which I would not want to expatiate on here.โ€
