The president, however, demanded guarantees that Ukraine will not mobilise or train troops, nor receive military aid during the 30-day ceasefire.

Speaking at a press conference with Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, the Russian president said that the end of hostilities should “address the original causes of the crisis”.

Ukraine had agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the US during the talks in Jeddah on 11 March, provided that Russia did as well.

The talks in Saudi Arabia also led to the US restarting key military and intelligence support for Ukraine after it was halted last week.

Putin noted that the proposed temporary truce must be designed in a way that leads to long-term peace between the two nations.
