BREAKING: CAF Unveils Annual African Nations League

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially launched the African Nations League, a new annual competition designed to provide a consistent, high-level platform for the continent’s senior national teams and showcase its top talent.

In an announcement shared via its official channels, CAF emphasized that the initiative guarantees an annual world-class senior national team tournament featuring Africa’s best players, many of whom compete in top leagues worldwide.

“CAF launches exciting new African Nations League and guarantees that CAF will host, every year, a world-class Senior National Team Competition in which the best African players will participate,” the statement read.

The competition aims to bolster African football by promoting more meaningful matches, aiding player development, increasing exposure for national teams, and enhancing fan engagement across the continent.

The annual format is intended to deliver regular elite-level football for players and supporters alike.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe highlighted the reforms as a step toward elevating African national team competitions to global standards, while also improving alignment with the international calendar to reduce conflicts between club and country commitments.

The launch comes as part of broader restructuring efforts, including the shift of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year cycle following an edition planned for 2028.

The new African Nations League is set to debut in 2029, involving all 54 member associations and utilizing FIFA international windows.
