EDITORIAL: Polity Reporters Condemns Show Of Shame In Adamawa
Polity Reporters strongly condemns the most recent abuse of democracy in Adamawa state, where the Residential Electoral Commissioner unilaterally declared Aisha Binani, the APC governorship candidate, as the winner of the Adamawa governorship election on Sunday, April 16, 2023, following a rerun a day earlier.
We believe that the concept of free and fair elections, with the outcomes reflecting the will of the majority, is the foundation of an ideal democracy. By acting in violation of this principle in Adamawa State, the INEC Commissioner blatantly jeopardises the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic system.
In fact, it is disappointing to see the “mind” in charge of upholding democratic values and ensuring a free and fair electoral process in Adamawa give in to parochial considerations and subvert popular will.
It is unambiguous that the INEC commissioner who made the illegitimate declaration acted willfully in contravention of the electoral laws and regulations, jeopardising the validity of the entire electoral process. And this indeed serves as a sad reminder of the difficulties Nigeria still has in establishing and bolstering its democratic institutions
While applauding INEC for putting the usurper of democracy in Adamawa on administrative suspension, Polity Reporters demands that they go further and immediately launch an investigation into this illegal activity and impose the appropriate sanctions on those responsible for this flagrant sacrilege of the electoral process.
This is even as we urge everyone to remain vigilant, be steadfast in defending their democratic rights, and demand accountability from their institutions and leaders at the same time.
Together, we must defend democracy and make sure that the outcomes of all electoral processes accurately reflect the will of the majority. This is the only way to guarantee a safe, peaceful, and prosperous future for our wonderful nation.
Finally, we appeal to all Nigerians to stand with us in condemning this heinous act, while promoting the development of a more robust and vibrant democracy in our dear nation.
