Hijab: Drama As Lawyer Dresses Like Reverend To Court
Proceedings at the Okpoko magistrate court in Ogbaru Local Government Area, in Onitsha, Anambra State, were disturbed on Thursday when a lawyer, known as Ogbachalu Goshen, walked in court dressed in full priest robes, looking like a reverend.
The court hearings, presided over by Her Worship CB Mbaegbu, continued till a case was called up and Goshen announced his appearance as a defence attorney.
When the Magistrate told him he couldn’t appear and address the court in such regalia, he objected, citing a recent Supreme Court decision that allowed female students to wear hijab in public schools as precedent.
As the Magistrate stood her ground that he cannot appear in her court in that mode of dressing, Goshen also insisted that it was his right and that the objection by the Magistrate was an infringement on his fundamental rights as enshrined in Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
As the discussions proceeded, with both the Magistrate and the lawyer unwilling to change their positions, the Magistrate stood, compelling the court to dismiss the case immediately.
Various lawyers and persons who had come for various reasons filed outside as the Magistrate quickly into her car and sped away.
However, Goshen justified his conduct in an interview, claiming that the incident had already become a constitutional issue since the Supreme Court made such a judgement.
He also stated that the court should address what will happen if a female Muslim lawyer approaches the court wearing a headscarf.
He stated that because the Supreme Court ruled, he should be able to appear in court as an ordained priest.
When asked if the verdict is in the best interests of the judiciary, he stated that for the time being, it is a precedent that must be followed unless there is a judicial review.
