Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Polity Reporters WhatsApp Group Agog Over Shettima As VP

A cross-section of youths housed inside the Polity Reporters WhatsApp group have expressed concerns about the news of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu reportedly choosing a northern Muslim as his running mate.
Recall that Polity Reporters earlier reported yesterday that Tinubu had confirmed Borno Central Senator Kashim Shettima as his vice presidential candidate, having previously submitted the name of Kabiru Masari to INEC, as his place holder.
However, Polity Reporters WhatsApp group was enthralled yesterday when several youths expressed opposing perspectives on the situation. While some criticised the decision, others claimed it was the consequence of intensive political calculations necessitated by contemporary reality.
The following are comments obtained by Polity Reporters:
Bariwhite, a political science student, said: “As fragile as this country appears to be, a man still has the guts to ride on a Muslim-Muslim ticket.”
Mr Tolulope Cole said: “I can bet it that Muslims can never accept this, if it were to be Christian/Christian ticket. Except if any Muslim in this platform will not want to say the truth. So, no single northern Christian is competent? A Big slap on Christianity, but as usual as our religion is we won’t talk.”
The outspoken Hon. Akinte said: “Politicians seek to win elections. And it is based on calculations, structural drawings that can favour them.I think to the populace or the general views this might not be their wish. But I think the best thing to do as electorates who do not concur with this combination is not to vote for them. If they win, they succeed. But they cannot win without the people. So, let the people decide come 2023.”
The former Speaker of Sultan Bello Hall, UI, Rt. Hon. ABC Chukwuma said: “Actually, Muslim/Muslim ticket should not have been issue but this is a country where in the last 60 days, two persons have been killed for blasphemy and no northern Muslim politician condemned it. Abeg spares me that rubbish of there is nothing wrong with a Muslim/Muslim ticket.”
Mr Phillip, also a Uite said, “It shouldn’t be an issue if u feel he won’t win with the ticket. It becomes an issue when you are afraid.”
A participant with the username usalukaku said, “It’s not a must you vote for him, if you’re pissed with the Muslim/Muslim ticket, you can vote for another party with Muslim/Christian ticket or Christian/Muslim ticket Life no hard.”
Reacting to a comment that the ticket is already a done deal, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma said, “It is funny how some persons are shouting done deal. It is not also going to be easy for Tinubu in the NorthWest. And funny enough that is where the votes are. NorthWest since 1999 doesn’t vote Southerners once there is a Northerner on the ballot. That’s why since 2003 till 2019, Buhari has been winning in the NorthWest. He only lost in 2007 because Yar’Auda was on the ballot. In 1999, there was no northern candidate on the ballot. Kwakwaso might get 50 or 40% of the NorthWest vote.”
The former president of NAPPAS, AAUA, Prof. Tee said “Wait o, is Nigeria as a country only religiously divided? Why are we not talking about ethnicity? Remember, ethnic groups exist before any religion in this country. laying emphasis on religion alone in this matter may portrays that one is an extremist…. The man is from Yoruba descent and he choose an Hausa man. That’s simple.”
Speaking on why Tinubu wasn’t considered as VP to Buhari in 2015, Prof. Tee maintained: “Because APC needs to clear the propaganda then that Buhari was coming to islamize Nigeria. So choosing a Christian Southerner who is a pastor is the best way to convince Nigeria. Is Osinbajo the only Christian politician then? Why must a pastor be picked? This are calculations.”
Hon. Akinte further added that, “If you want a SW Muslim to become the President of Nigeria, a Muslim Muslim ticket is the only way out unless if you don’t want a SW Muslim to become the President. That was exactly the thought of MKO in 1993. The Far North is the main voting population in Nigeria and they are predominantly Muslims, so allow them to give you their candidate. They just gave us Kashim Shettima. I just took pity on any opposition VP that will debate Senator Kashim Shettima. We are watching ooo !!!”
Reacting to Ebun-Olu Adegoruwa’s assertion that Nigerians should reject the Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Mr Phillip said, “Even when APC in 2015 picked a pastor from this same Ebun Adegboruwa’s church, he was fiercely against the candidacy of Buhari. Funny thing is other parties are bringing up very good combinations you can support them. ISWAP has even killed more Muslims than christians. I don’t know what is wrong with us.”
The group is still visibly vibrating with comments as of the time of writing this report.
