EDITORIAL: The Urgent Need For Restructuring Nigeria

In recent times, Nigeria has been grappling with a myriad of challenges across various sectors, ranging from economic downturns to insecurity, dilapidated infrastructure, and a struggling agricultural sector. These issues have underscored the urgent need for the restructuring of our nation’s governance and administrative framework. It is high time we critically examined why restructuring is imperative for Nigeria’s progress and development.

Firstly, the current centralized system of governance in Nigeria has proven to be inefficient and ineffective in addressing the diverse needs and aspirations of our multi-ethnic and multicultural society.

The concentration of power and resources at the federal level has led to bureaucratic bottlenecks, corruption, and a lack of accountability. Restructuring, by devolving power to the states and local governments, will promote greater autonomy, efficiency, and responsiveness in governance.

Moreover, the economic challenges facing Nigeria necessitate a reevaluation of our fiscal structure.

The over-reliance on oil revenue has left our economy vulnerable to external shocks and fluctuations in global oil prices.

A restructured fiscal system that grants more fiscal autonomy to states will encourage economic diversification, innovation, and sustainable development. Each state can leverage its unique comparative advantages and resources to drive growth and prosperity.

Further, the current security situation in Nigeria demands a more decentralized approach to law enforcement and security management.

The federal government’s monopoly on security has proven inadequate in addressing the escalating threats posed by insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminality.

Restructuring will empower states to take proactive measures to secure their territories, collaborate with local communities, and tailor security strategies to their specific needs and challenges.

Must say is the state of our infrastructure, particularly our road networks, amplifies the urgent need for restructuring.

Decades of neglect and mismanagement have left our roads in deplorable conditions, hindering economic activities, and endangering lives.

With greater fiscal autonomy, state governments can prioritize infrastructure development projects, including road construction and maintenance, to improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and enhance mobility.

In the agricultural sector, restructuring presents an opportunity to unlock the immense agricultural potential of Nigeria and transform it into a major driver of economic growth and food security.

Fact is that we will be empowering states to implement tailored agricultural policies and initiatives, if we harness the comparative advantages of different regions, promote sustainable farming practices, and enhance productivity and food sufficiency.

To end, the current hardships facing Nigeria demands the urgent need for restructuring to address the systemic flaws and inefficiencies in our governance, economic, security, and infrastructure frameworks.

No gainsay, restructuring will promote greater autonomy, accountability, and responsiveness in governance, spur economic diversification and growth, enhance security and law enforcement, and facilitate infrastructure development and agricultural transformation.

It is therefore high time we embraced restructuring as a viable solution to chart a path towards a more prosperous, united, and working Nigeria.
