Rivers Administrator Swears In 23 LG Chairmen

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), the Administrator of Rivers State, on Monday swore in 23 newly elected Local Government Chairmen, urging them to prioritize service delivery and deliver tangible democratic dividends to the people at the grassroots level.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Addressing the new council leaders, Ibas emphasized the weighty responsibilities of public office, describing leadership as “a call to selfless service” rather than an opportunity for personal gain.

“Leadership is not a reward but a duty. It is not an entitlement,” he said, cautioning against the misuse of political power for personal benefit.

He challenged the chairmen to adopt people-centered leadership, focusing on measurable outcomes in security, infrastructure, and social services, and to move away from patronage politics.

Reflecting on the state’s recent political challenges, Ibas noted that President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18, 2025, had set the stage for the successful local government elections held on August 30.

He described the polls as a “milestone in restoring constitutional order and strengthening the will of the people,” commending the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission for conducting a transparent and credible process.

He also praised the electorate for their discipline and high voter turnout.

Ibas urged the chairmen to deepen their understanding of the Nigerian Constitution and local government laws, which he described as the “true compass of leadership.”

He outlined key policy priorities, including collaboration with security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders to maintain peace, which he called a prerequisite for progress.

Additionally, he encouraged investments in education, support for small businesses, and infrastructure development to boost local economies.

The administrator also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing council administrators, who played a crucial role in stabilizing governance during a turbulent period, and wished them success in their future endeavors.

The newly sworn-in chairmen are now tasked with translating these directives into actionable results to enhance governance and development across Rivers State’s 23 local government areas.
