Third Term: I’m Not Obasanjo— Buhari Tells UK Prime Minister

On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the maximum term limit set forth in the Nigerian Constitution, saying that the last person to attempt running for a third term in office did not fare well.

Buhari did not name any specific former Nigerian president, but it is assumed that he was referring to the 1999–2007 president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Buhari was questioned about running for reelection during a private meeting he had with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson outside of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda.

“Another term for me? No! The first person who tried it didn’t end very well,” a statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said.
