We Don’t Recognize Akpabio As APC Akwa Ibom Senatorial Candidate — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared on Sunday that it does not accept former Minister of the Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate in Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district.

According to INEC, it will only recognise the candidate who emerged from the party primary that it observed.

Recall that Akpabio, after his failure to secure the APC presidential ticket contested for Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial ticket in a rerun primary where he was able to secure the senate ticket after receiving 478 votes.

But in response to the development, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State, Mr Mike Igini, stated that the electoral umpire will only recognise the victor of the INEC-monitored primaries.

According to him, INEC did not monitor the re-run APC senatorial primaries in which Akpabio emerged winner.

“The primaries was concluded on the 27th of last month, so I don’t know what you are talking about. The one that was conducted was monitored by INEC and the report has been submitted to Abuja.

“INEC is not aware of any senatorial primaries conducted on Thursday (June 9) that was monitored by INEC, none,” he stated.

He added in his submission that the APC has no governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State as the governorship primary where Mr Akanimo Udofia emerged winner was not monitored by INEC.
