Blackout As National Grid Collapses Across Nigeria

Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Monday afternoon, plunging most parts of the country into darkness as power supply dropped to near zero, according to load figures released by distribution companies.

Data from the Distribution Companies showed that by 3:12 pm on December 29, 2025, only the Ibadan and Abuja Electricity Distribution Companies were receiving a small amount of power, recording 30 megawatts and 20 megawatts respectively.

All other major distribution firms reported zero megawatts at the time of the collapse.

At the height of the outage, total electricity supply nationwide stood at just about 50 megawatts, a far cry from the normal operating levels needed to keep homes, businesses, and essential services running.

The latest collapse adds to a pattern of repeated grid failures that have frequently caused blackouts in Nigeria in recent years, spotlighting the ongoing fragility of the country’s power system.

Officials from the Nigerian National Grid said efforts to restore power were already underway, but as of Monday evening no detailed timeline for full restoration had been provided.

Consumers and businesses across major cities and towns reported widespread outages, leaving many without electricity throughout the afternoon.

The cause of this latest collapse has not yet been confirmed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria or the Federal Ministry of Power, and investigations are ongoing.
